Ireland vs Romania
Number One ranked Ireland kick off the action in Pool B when they take on minnows Romania in their opening round match. The Green Machine have been the form team in world rugby for the past two seasons but they will have to do to without the services of some of their injured forwards like Jack Conan and Dan Sheehan. Things don’t look too bright for the Romanians as they have lost their last two matches by 50 point margins. Ireland will want to win this match with an excellent points difference as Pool B is the group of death. Points differential could play a part in deciding which two teams advance from the group.
TIP: Ireland will be keen to play their strongest team as they have Tonga in their next game before facing the Springboks in their third pool match. They will want to give the likes of James Lowe and Garry Ringrose a run as these players have not played much rugby recently. Romania’s best chance of keeping the score to a respectable level will be to slow the game down as much as possible. The bookies have Ireland as favorites and I’m also tipping them for the win. PREDICTION
Ireland have quality across the park while their opponents are relatively new to test rugby with their recent results confirming this. The Green Machine will hope to build a huge lead and with the match secure, they will turn to their replacement bench. The Romanians will need to find a way to at least find some sort of parity in the scrums and lineouts otherwise we will see a cricket score being racked up. Ireland will be looking to their inspirational Captain Jonny Sexton to spark their potent backline. If the backline is on form, then I predict an Irish win by 65 points.
