South Africa vs Romania
Defending champions South Africa take on Romania in this second round match in Group B. This group was billed the group of death with the Springboks, Ireland and Scotland fighting for two places. The Springboks took a giant step towards the quarter finals when they saw of the Scots 18-3 in their opening match. Romania could not have asked for a tougher assignment to kick of their campaign when they came up against the number one ranked Ireland and were duly punished 82-8. It doesn’t get any easier for The Oaks but they will want an improved performance especially in the second half.
TIP: South Africa were rocked by the news that their superstar hooker Malcolm Marx has been injured and will miss the rest of the tournament. Bongi Mbonambi comes in for Marx and he also gets the Captaincy for the match. Romania will do well do stay away from too many set pieces as the scrums and lineouts are the Springboks big strengths. The Boks have picked a side that will be keen to run, so we could see some exciting rugby. The bookies have South Africa as favorites and I’m also tipping them for the win. PREDICTION
A bonus point victory for the Springboks is almost a foregone conclusion but they will want a huge win to boost their points differential in case of a log jam for the top two places. South Africa have selected Grant Williams on the wing and some may see this as a surprise but the regular scrum half is the fastest player in the squad. The Boks will first look to overpower The Oaks with their forward pack before unleashing their backline stars that include the likes of Canan Moodie and Andre Esterhuizen. Romania have to keep ball in hand as any loose kicking will be punished by the Boks back three. I am predicting a Springbok win by over 70 points.
