Wellington vs Southland

Defending champions Wellington play their first home match as they welcome the Southland Stags to the Sky Stadium. The home team are two wins from two but are yet to hit the lofty heights of last season especially in attack. Their defence has been miserly as ever, only conceding a total of 11 points in their two matches. The visitors have had a poor start to the season as they still search for their first win of the season after a loss and a draw in their opening two matches. They were unlucky not to come away with the win last time out as they conceded a try in the dying moments and had to settle for a share of the spoils.

TIP: Wellington have chosen to make a number of changes for this match as they play three games in the space of nine days. They have made one very important positional change with Rueben Love moving from fullback into the flyhalf position. Southland look to have selected the same forwards pack that did duty in the last match but it is the backline that needs to fire as they have struggled to get over the try line. The bookies have Wellington as favourites and I’m also tipping them for the win. The best odds on this bet are as follows: Betway 1.05, Gbets 1.04 and Hollywoodbets 1.05

Wellington vs Southland

  • Wellington have never lost to Southland in their previous eight matches.
  • The closest match between these sides was a 30-25 win for Wellington back in 2011.

Latest results for both teams

Wellington beat Otago 28-5 in their last match while Southland drew 15-15 with Northland in their last match.

Southland have also made a number of substantial changes as they have dropped the experienced pair of Marty Banks and Scott Gregory. They will need to front up to the home sides powerful pack or they risk chasing shadows. The decision to move Love to flyhalf will mean that Wellington will be looking to attack from anywhere on the field as he is a great attacking threat. Another player that the visitors need to watch out for is Riley Higgins as the young centre can be deadly with ball in hand. I am predicting a home win by more than 25 points.
