France U20 vs Japan U20
Group A’s action begins with defending champions France taking on Japan in one of the David vs Goliath contests in the tournament. The French will be disappointed that they didn’t win the Six Nations this year, finishing in second spot. Japan last played in the junior World Cup back in 2018 and finished that tournament winless. They have failed to win in their last 18 matches dating back to 2015 when they beat Samoa. The French will no doubt be targeting the much smaller Japanese pack in this match therefore the Asian team will want to avoid too many set pieces.
TIP: The French have always used their big pack of forwards to dominate teams and this year will be no exception as they have the giant lock Posolo Tuilagi among their ranks. The 18 year old is 140kg ball of muscle and the Japanese players will struggle to stop him. Japan will need to look at the example of their senior team and come up with novel plays to catch the French team napping. The bookies have France as favourites and I’m also tipping them for the win. HEAD TO HEAD STATS
France U20 vs Japan U20
- France have won all three previous matches against Japan.
- The average margin of victory in the previous matches were 27 points
Latest results for both teams
France beat Wales 67-17 in their last match while Japan lost 39-33 to Ireland in their last match.
The French selectors have taken the unusual step of leaving two of their star players Emilien Gailleton and Louis Bielle-Biarrey back home as there is an outside chance of them making the senior squad which is far-fetched. Despite their absence the team has plenty of players who have played first class rugby in their country while not a lot is known of the Japanese players. One thing is certain is that they will look to speed up the game at every opportunity as they will want to tire out the big French pack. I am predicting a highly one sided match with France winning by 35 points.
