Scotland vs Tonga
Scotland take on Tonga in this Pool B match, with the loser of this contest unable to progress to the quarter finals. The Scots have had two weeks break since their loss to the Springboks and it remains to be seen if it is an advantage. In their opening match, they were bereft of ideas against a rush defence even with the maestro Finn Russell in the team.
Tonga were competitive in the initial part of their match against Ireland before succumbing to the continued onslaught of the number one ranked team. Scotland have started poorly in their previous five matches and will want to be on point from the first whistle.
TIP: Scotland are likely to go into the match with an unchanged XV but there will be a change on the bench after hooker Dave Cherry was forced out of the tournament with an injury. They will need to play a high tempo game and move the Tongans around the field. The Sea Eagles will be looking for more impact from the bench as Scotland are at their strongest deep in the second half. The bookies have Scotland as favorites and I’m also tipping them for the win. HEAD TO HEAD STATS
Scotland vs Tonga
- Scotland have won three of the four previous matches against Tonga.
- Tonga have only beaten Scotland once and that was back in 2012.
Latest results for both teams
Scotland lost 18-3 to the Springboks in their first match while Tonga was beaten 59-16 Ireland in their last match.
Scotland have attacking threats across the field especially with the likes of Blair Kinghorn, Darcy Graham and Duhan van der Merwe in the back three. Tonga will need to be accurate with their kicking game otherwise they will spend the match chasing shadows. Tonga have their own superstar in former All Black Charles Piutau who beat Irish defenders for fun although he couldn’t find the try line. The match will be decided in the forwards and this is an area that Scotland certainly have the advantage. If Tonga can maintain possession for long periods that can nullify the Russell threat, then it could be a close match. I am predicting a Scottish win by 12 points.
