Sharks vs Griffons
The resurgent Sharks take on the winless Griffons in Durban in this penultimate round match in the Currie Cup. The home team can qualify for the semi-final if they secure a bonus point win and one of the Cheetahs or Pumas fail to win. They currently hold a two-point advantage over both those sides. It has been a remarkable turnaround for the men from Durban after they lost their opening three matches. The visitors are still seeking their first win and look set to complete their campaign without tasting victory. it’s been a tough season for the Griffons after they lost some of their better players to other unions.
TIP: In a strange decision that is aimed at preparing the Sharks for the URC, John Plumtree is taking over the Currie Cup side mid-season from JP Pietersen. He has selected a near URC strength team with Jordan Hendrikse making his debut in the 15 jersey. They also have double World Cup winner Makazole Mapimpi on the wing. The Griffons have not made too many changes from the team that lost 45-26 to the Pumas in the last round. . The bookies have the Sharks as favorites and I am also backing them for the win. The best odds on this bet are as follows: Tictacbets 1.01, Betway 1.01 and Bettabets 1.01
HEAD-TO-HEAD STATS
Sharks vs Griffons
- The Sharks have won the previous three meetings between the sides.
Latest results for both teams
The Sharks beat WP 31-23 in their last match while the Griffons lost 45-26 to the Pumas last time out.
PREDICTION
The main reason for the Sharks turn around has been the improved form of veteran flyhalf Lionel Cronje. He showed his class and experience in the last match against WP when he kicked a drop goal in the dying minutes to make sure of the win. His controlling of the game has been excellent and that has seen winger Eduan Keyter become a key member of the attack. The Griffons will hope to keep the score down to a respectable level as they face the strongest Sharks named in this seasons competition. They have dangerous runners in Kyle Cyster and Gurshwin Wehr if they can find them in space. The Sharks have too much firepower and I predict a home win by more than 50 points.
