Sharks vs Lions
The Sharks welcome the Lions to Durban for this penultimate round match in the Currie Cup. The home team have hit a purple patch, winning their last six matches in the competition to soar to top spot on the log.
A seventh consecutive win could secure them top spot and a home semifinal and final if they make it through that far. The Lions are in a precarious situation as they are in fifth position on the same number of points (31) as the team in fourth spot. They will need to win their remaining two matches to qualify for the semi-finals.
TIP: The Sharks unlike the Lions and Bulls have resisted the temptation to overload their Currie Cup team with URC players but have rather created a blend of the two squads. The form of veteran flyhalf Lionel Cronje has been one of the major reasons for their success. The Lions despite having a full strength squad have struggled for cohesion in attack but their defence has kept them in many of the games. The bookies have the Sharks as favourites and I’m also tipping them for the win. The best odds on this bet are as follows: Betway 1.80, Gbets 1.81 and Hollywoodbets 1.81
HEAD TO HEAD STATS
Sharks vs Lions
- The Sharks have won six of the last eight matches against the Lions
- The Sharks have only lost one of their last 12 home matches against the Lions
Latest results for both teams
The Sharks beat the Griffons 35-9 in their last match while the Lions beat WP 32-12 in their last match.
The Sharks have learnt the art of winning ugly and this was evident in their last match against the Griffons. They struggled for long periods of the match as they constantly kicked away possession but they eventually relied on their trusty forwards pack to dominate with the rolling maul. This has been their major weapon all season therefore the Lions maul defence will need to be excellent.
The visitors seem to be lacking energy in attack but the man burning up the pitch for them is Edwill van der Merwe. He has been arguably the player of the season and the Sharks must avoid giving him space otherwise he will run riot. I am backing the Sharks to win by 8 points.
