Champions League draw: Real Madrid to play Chelsea

The Champions League quarter-final draw was conducted in Nyon, Switzerland with 2021 winners Chelsea drawn to play against defending Champions Real Madrid.

Los Blancos play against English opposition for the second time in succession after having comfortably overcome last season’s finalists Liverpool in the quarter-finals.

Madrid will be the favourites to advance to the semi-finals form the tie with Chelsea struggling domestically this season under Graham Potter.

Manchester City have been drawn to play against Bayern Munich. City boss Pep Guardiola will be hoping that this is the season in which he can finally lead his club to the one trophy that has eluded him since he was appointed as it’s manager in 2016. The Champions League also remains the one trophy that has eluded City since their Arab revolution in 2008.

City will be the favourites to advance from the tie with Bayern not their usual dominant selves in the Bundesliga this season. The absence of Robert Lewandowski who left to join Barcelona looks to have taken a toll on Die Roten.

There are three Italian teams in the quarter-finals with no Serie A side having won the competition since Inter Milan prevailed in 2010. In an all Italian clash, AC Milan play against Napoli while the other Italian side Inter Milan will face off against surprise package Benfica.
