Lyon vs Sharks
Tip 1: Lyon to win
Reason for the tip: Former champions Lyon welcome current title holders the Sharks in this Round of 16 clash. The home side have gone with a full strength team for this match while the visitors have sent a second string team. The Sharks management are obviously prioritizing the URC campaign which is surprising considering they are the defending champions of this title. There are plenty of threats in the Lyon side, none more so than flying Italian winger Monty Ioane. The Sharks will be hoping that the selection of Siya Masuku at flyhalf will improve their attack as they struggled last week against Leinster.
Lyon are unbeaten in their last eight home matches so the Sharks will need to be at their very best if they are to beat them. There are a host of youngsters in the visitors team but it remains to be seen if they can cope with a partisan home crowd. The experience of the Lyon team makes me predict a win for the French team.
Toulouse vs Sale Sharks
Tip 2: Toulouse to win
Reason for the tip: Champions Toulouse play host to the Sale Sharks in the final round 16 match of the Champions Cup. The home team have been scintillating form all season but will be without their talisman Anton Dupont who could be out for the rest of the campaign. Sale have brought their strongest possible team and will need to play out of their skins if they are to cause one of the great upsets in this tournament. Much will depend on George Ford and how he controls the game with his boot. If he kicks loosely, his side will be punished by the likes of Blair Kinghorn and Tomas Ramos.
Toulouse are famous for their brilliant attacking backline but it is their forwards that are arguably the best in Europe. They lay the platform that allows the backs to showcase their skills. Sale will need to match the home side in the forwards if they are to prevent them from getting quick ball to their backline. Even without Dupont, Toulouse have too much firepower therefore I predict them to win this match.
Handicap Betting Tips For Today
Bordeaux vs Ulster – Home team (-24.5)
Reason for tip: Bordeaux Begles will host Ulster in this Round 16 clash in the Champions Cup. The home team have been one of the form teams in Europe this season but have decided not to start with their best XV with their playmaker Mathieu Jalibert due to come off the bench. Joey Carbery is the starting ten against his old rival and it remains to be seen if he can link up the potent backline of the hosts. Ulster will be competitive in the first half but I am expecting Bordeaux to flex their muscles in the second half and win by a margin of more than 25 points.
Kobe Steelers vs Brave Lupus: Away team (-4.5)
Reason for tip: Kobe Steelers welcome table topping Brave Lupus for this Japan League One match. The home team are currently in fifth place on the log, just eight points off the semi-final spots. They do however have a game in hand over the fourth placed team and can get within three points if they can get a bonus point win. Brave Lupus have been the best team in the league and can reclaim top spot with a win in this match. I am backing them for the win and to cover the -4.5 handicap.

Understanding Rugby Betting
It is crucial that players understand the different types of rugby betting. If a player places a wager on a handicap bet with fully understanding it, he could think they won the bet but instead they lost the bet as they did not understand how it works.
Different types of Rugby bets
Match Winner
The most self-explanatory of bets to take on a rugby match. This is the most common and oldest type of rugby bet in which you select Team A or Team B to win. The odds on this type of bet may be low especially if your team is the favourite.
Draw No Bet
The draw is quite rare in Rugby Union, but it does happen from time to time. If you’re worried about the draw messing up your bet then take a Draw No Bet market. Your bet will be refunded if the match result ends in a draw.
Handicap Betting
The most popular bets on rugby are handicap bets. This is often where some of the best value is to be found. The handicap is an advantage that bookmakers give one team to make the game more balanced. The team given the positive handicap can win, draw or lose the game by less than the handicap to cover the bet and win. The team with the negative handicap must win the match by more than the points set out in the handicap to win their bet.
Total points over/under
The over/under betting market involves predicting whether the total number of points scored in a match will be above or lower than a certain predetermined number. For instance, if you bet on the over/under 50 points market and you bet on under, the combined score of the two teams shouldn’t exceed 50.
First Try Scorer
Rugby fans know the excitement that comes when a player breaks through the defence to score the first try. Betting on the first-try scorer is about predicting which player from either team will cross the try line first. This bet type carries higher odds as it’s challenging to predict, making potential payouts more lucrative.
Anytime Try Scorer
Less specific than the first-try scorer bet, the anytime try scorer wager involves picking a player you believe will score a try at any point during the match. The odds are typically lower than for the first-try scorer but offer a better chance of a payout.
