LA LIGA 2025/2026 Round Up

Another exhilarating season of La Liga 25/26 has ended, which saw heartache, triumph and perseverance all unfold right before our eyes. Hansi Flick’s Barcelona side saw off arch rivals Real Madrid to win back-to-back La Liga titles and secure their 29th overall.

European Qualifiers (UCL, UEL & UECL)

A strong showing in Europe this past season resulted in five Spanish sides qualifying for Europe’s premier competition, the UEFA Champions League. Champions Barcelona will be joined by Real Madrid, Villarreal, Atletico Madrid and fifth-place Real Betis, who will be returning after a two-decade absence.

An impressive finish to their campaign sees Celta Vigo regain a spot in next season’s UEFA Europa League, joined by Copa del Rey winners Real Sociedad. A resilient defensive effort has seen Getafe secure the final European spot and book themselves a place in next season’s UEFA Conference League.

Relegation and Promotion

The final gameweek of La Liga had seen some tense matches, a win for Mallorca and a point for Girona were not enough which meant that both teams dropped to La Segunda. Newly promoted Real Oviedo could not sustain their promotion heroics from last season and dropped back to the Spanish second tier.

La Segunda champions Racing Santander will return to the Spanish top flight after a decade and a half’s absence. They will be joined by Deportivo La Coruna, who secured automatic promotion back to La Liga, and Málaga, who won the promotion playoffs.

Key La Liga Performers to Look Out For During the 2026 FIFA World Cup

Despite not winning any silverware for Real Madrid, Kylian Mbappe has found life in Spain exceptionally good, having notched 25 goals in his 31 appearances to win back-to-back golden boots. He will be expected to take his form into the World Cup, where he leads the French attack and will be pivotal in their pursuit of a third World Cup final appearance in as many tournaments.

Barcelona talisman Lamine Yamal continued to dazzle spectators with his dribbling prowess and completed the most assists with 11 in his 28 appearances. His inclusion in the Spanish World Cup squad has raised a few eyebrows due to his thigh injury. However, he should make a few appearances and be a part of important goal involvements in the World Cup. He will be joined by several Barcelona teammates as well, including Pedri, Gavi and Dani Olmo.

Real Madrid star man, Vinicius Junior, will look to take his 21 G/A this season and secure Brazil’s sixth World Cup. Brazil are without World Cup glory in over two decades, and Claudio Ancelotti’s men will be keen to prove their naysayers wrong and reclaim their spot as the best International side in the world.

After an impressive season in front of goal and saving his team from relegation with 17 goals, Osasuna’s Ante Budimir will be aiming to help an ageing Croatian side reclaim their 2018 World Cup highs and have a deep run in this year’s installment.

A difficult test is set for Atletico Madrid’s Alexander Sorloth, as his Norway team will face off against strong teams in France, Senegal and underdogs Iraq. However, his 13 goal involvements in 35 appearances will be pivotal in helping his team get out of the group stage and make a deep run in the World Cup.

Sights Set on the Future

After a thrilling 25/26 La Liga season, there are many questions that are being asked about next season’s title challengers.

Will Barcelona reclaim their title for a third time on the trot? Or will Madrid finally find some success for their new generation under Jose Mourinho? Can Simeone reawaken a fragile Atletico side and add another La Liga title to his tally?

Fans will not need to wait for very long to answer these questions, as the La Liga 26/27 season is set to commence on the weekend of August 15/16.

In the meantime, you can look forward to Topbet’s Daily Predictions on all things football and our comprehensive coverage of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
