What is Serie A?
Serie A is the top-flight professional club football league in Italy. The Italian Serie A was founded in 1898 and is contested by 20 clubs, operating under a promotion and relegation system with Serie B. The season uses a round-robin system, with each team playing 38 Serie A fixtures, home and away, against the other 19 teams to determine the Serie A title winner.
Serie A is considered one of the top four European football leagues, behind England’s Premier League, Spain’s La Liga and Germany’s Bundesliga. Juventus is the most successful club in Italy and holds the record for the most official Italian League titles, with 36. They are followed by the two Milan clubs: the defending champions, Inter Milan, and AC Milan, who hold the record for the most UEFA Champions League titles by an Italian side.
How the Serie A Season Works
Serie A is an annual competition from August to May that operates on a round-robin format with 20 club teams. Each of the 20 teams plays every other team twice, once at their home stadium and once on the road. A team plays 38 games in a Serie A season, which runs from August to May. The league phase is split into two halves, called andata (first 19 matchdays) and ritorno (the remaining 19 matchdays). Between the two halves is a short Winter break, usually around two weeks, in December.
A Serie A match is split into two halves, each lasting 45 minutes plus additional time. At the end of the match, a team can earn 3 points for winning the match, 1 point if the match ends in a draw or tie and 0 points for losing. At the end of the season, the team with the most points is crowned the Italian Serie A champion and is awarded the Scudetto, while the bottom three teams (18th, 19th, and 20th) are relegated to Serie B.
If teams are tied for 1st place or for 17th place, a one-game playoff is played at a neutral venue to decide the winner. If there is a tie for the final European spots, the final positions are decided by head-to-head points. If the teams cannot be separated, the positions will be decided by head-to-head goal difference, followed by overall goal difference and finally the total number of goals scored during the league campaign.
European Qualification and Relegation Places
The number of slots available to Italian clubs is determined by their UEFA coefficient ranking, a metric that reflects their performance in European competitions over previous seasons. As they failed to finish as the top two nations in the UEFA coefficient rankings, Italy is allowed to enter 7 teams in European competitions. The top four sides in Serie A automatically qualify for the UEFA Champions League (UCL) group phase.
The 5th-placed team and the Coppa Italia (Italy’s domestic cup) winners qualify directly for the UEFA Europa League (UEL). The team that finished the season in 6th place will qualify for the UEFA Europa Conference League (UECL). However, if the Coppa Italia winner already qualifies for the UCL or UEL based on their league standings, then the 6th-placed team will qualify directly for the Europa League, and the 7th-placed team will qualify for the UECL.
If Italy is among the top two nations that earned the most UEFA coefficient points over the previous five seasons, an additional Champions League spot will be awarded to the 5th-placed team. In this occurrence, all remaining European spots will be pushed back one position.
Serie A operates with a direct relegation and playoff system with Serie B, the second division of Italian football. After the Serie A season concludes, three teams will be relegated. However, in the occurrence of a tie between the 18th-placed team (relegation spot) and the 17th-placed team (non-relegation spot), a one-game playoff will take place to determine which team will be relegated.
