Match Details
One of the pre-tournament favorites, France kick off their campaign against Senegal in what could prove to be a tricky encounter for Les Bleus. The Lions of Teranga have plenty to prove after they were controversially stripped of their AFCON title. France have not been at their clinical best in recent matches and will be hoping that skipper Kylian Mbappe can find his shooting boots.
FIFA rankings count for nothing at the World Cup as France found out in 2002 when they suffered a shock loss to Senegal. For the Africans to produce another major shock, they will need the likes of Sadio Mané, Kalidou Koulibaly and Édouard Mendy to be at their very best. This French side has depth to burn and has tremendous fire power all across the park.
Why This Match Matters
France knows that victory in this match will give them momentum for the rest of the tournament while Senegal will be going all out to at least get a draw which will drastically increase their chances of finishing in the top 2 in Group I. The Africans are likely to be in a straight shootout for second spot with Norway in the group so any points in this match will be a bonus. France will be aware this could be their toughest match in the group with a victory putting them in pole position to win the group.

These teams have only ever met once before on the international stage and the world will never forget that fateful day at the 2002 World Cup when France came into the tournament as defending champions but succumbed 1-0 to the Lions of Teranga in one of the greatest ever World Cup upsets.

27/03/2026 (FIFA Series): China 2 – 0 Curaçao
19/11/2025 (WC Qualifier): Jamaica 0 – 0 Curaçao
Curaçao have had a mixed bag of results heading into the World Cup. Their last game ended in a convincing 4-0 win against Aruba but this came after a run of poor performances in which they were unable to prevent 11 goals being scored against them in losses to Scotland, Australia, and China. Their defence has been particularly poor in these matches and will need a big improvement when they meet Germany.

Key players to watch: Sadio Mané is still the most dangerous attacking player in Senegal due to his speed, creativity, and goalscoring ability, even at his age. In front of him, Nicolas Jackson is a formidable goalscorer while Ismaïla Sarr is a fast and dangerous player in the wings. The midfielders in Senegal consist of Pape Matar Sarr and Lamine Camara, who have speed and quality. Meanwhile, captain Kalidou Koulibaly plays as the central defender in their team, and Edouard Mendy acts as their first-choice goalkeeper.and quick running to assist with defence.

Match Analysis and Verdict
Both teams will be desperate to kick off their World Cup campaigns with a win although the French start as major favorites. Senegal can take heart from the team of 2002 which upset Les Bleus at the tournament. It goes without saying that the key for the Lions of Taranga will be their defensive set against some of the worlds best attackers in Mbappe, Dembele and Olise.
Captain Kalidou Koulibaly will need to lead from the front as his defence will be tested throughout the 90 minutes. Senegal will have to feed off scraps with their best chance coming on the counter attack. If the Africans can keep the French at bay for the opening stanza, then they have a chance of an upset but if they concede early, it will be an uphill struggle. I am expecting Les Bleus to have too much firepower and to win this match 3-1 with Senegal grabbing a consolation goal.
Prediction: France 3 – 1 Senegal
