Match Details
Portugal came into the tournament as one of the favourites but made a slow start, being held to a 1-1 draw by DR Congo. That result leaves them under pressure to secure all three points against Uzbekistan if they want to stay on course for top spot in the group. Despite the setback, Portugal remain a formidable side and have lost just once in their last 14 international matches.
Uzbekistan also have work to do after a 3-1 defeat to Colombia in their World Cup debut. While the result was disappointing, they showed attacking intent and created several chances. Having enjoyed an excellent run of form before the tournament, Uzbekistan will believe they can challenge Portugal and keep their qualification hopes alive
Why This Match Matters
Portugal’s unexpected draw against DR Congo in the opening round has thrown Group K wide open. Uzbekistan, despite their loss in the opening match to Columbia will feel they still have a chance of qualification especially if they are able to avoid defeat in this match. The good news for Portugal is that it is highly improbable that they can play any worse than their first match. If they want to top the group for an easier match in the knockouts, they have to win this match.

Team News
Portugal Team News
There was plenty of criticism in the media about Portugal’s lack of firepower, with Captain Cristiano Ronaldo coming in for the most criticism. This is however unlikely to see the 41 year old dropped for this match.Rafael Leão could come into the team to add more pace and creativity on the wing.
Injuries: Defender Tomás Araújo could miss out through injury.
Suspensions: No suspensions
Key players to watch: Despite his lack of international goals in recent matches Portugal will once again look to Cristiano Ronaldo to lead the attack but he will need a better supply form the likes of Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva. Rafael Leão brings pace and directness on the left wing, while Nuno Mendes offers an attacking outlet with his overlapping runs. In midfield, Vitinha and João Neves will be tasked with controlling possession and dictating the tempo. Diogo Costa is not expected to be too busy between the sticks.
UzbekistanTeam News
Italian legend Fabio Cannavaro will have a major task on his hands as he does not have much quality in depth so despite the opening round loss, there are not expected to be many changes.
Injuries: Rustamjon Ashurmatov was forced off with an injury in their opening match.
Suspensions: No suspensions
Key players to watch: Uzbekistan will look to captain Eldor Shomurodov to provide the attacking spark against Portugal, with his experience and finishing ability crucial to their chances of causing an upset. Abbosbek Fayzullayev will be looking to add to his tally after scoring in the opener midfield, Otabek Shukurov will be tasked with breaking up Portugal’s attacks and helping his side maintain possession. Defensively, Abdukodir Khusanov will have a key role in containing Cristiano Ronaldo, while goalkeeper Utkir Yusupov may be called upon to make several important saves.

Match analysis and verdict
Portugal will need to up the tempo from the first game as they have attacking threats all across. They must put pressure on the shaky Uzbekistan defence from the first whistle.Bruno Fernandes is world class and needs the ball more often as he can provide majestic assists to Cristiano Ronaldo. Bernardo Silva and Rafael Leão have great creativity especially if they are given space and time on the ball. They are likely to dominate possession through the midfield pairing of Vitinha and João Neves.
Uzbekistan showed flashes of promise despite losing 3-1 to Colombia and cannot be underestimated. Eldor Shomurodov remains their biggest attacking threat, while Abbosbek Fayzullayev has the ability to create chances on the counter-attack. However, Uzbekistan have struggled defensively in recent matches and could find it difficult to contain Portugal’s movement and technical quality.
Portugal know that anything less than victory would put their qualification hopes under serious pressure. Expect them to start aggressively and control most of the game. Uzbekistan may create opportunities on the break, but Portugal’s superior class and experience should prove decisive. I am tipping them to win 3-0.
Prediction: Portugal 3- 0 Uzbekistan
