Why this match matters
Group F winners the Netherlands and Group C runners-up Morocco take centre stage in the fourth match of the last 32 for a place in the last 16. This encounter has cultural significance with some Moroccans emigrating to the Netherlands in the late 70’s for work, leading to many Moroccan star players honing their skills at Dutch youth academies.
This is their first meeting in almost a decade, with their most notable encounter being at the 1996 World Cup, three decades to the date. The Netherlands and Morocco have impressed in the World Cup thus far and enter the last 32 without losing a single match. The winner of this match will face off against the winner of South Africa vs Canada in the Round of 16.
Netherlands vs Morocco head-to-head stats
Head-to-head record
This is their first meeting in almost a decade, with their most notable encounter being at the 1996 USA World Cup, three decades to the date, but in Mexico. Both teams have faced off three times; interestingly, all three matches ended 2-1 in favour of the victor.
Both teams have found the back of the net in each of their meetings, with the Netherlands leading the head-to-head with two victories (2 – 0 – 1). In their three encounters, the Netherlands have scored five times, while Morocco has scored four times. Their three matches included the following details:
- 31/05/2017 (Friendly International): Morocco 1 – 2 Netherlands
- 28/04/1999 (Friendly International): Netherlands 1 – 2 Morocco
- 29/06/2026 (1996 FIFA World Cup): Morocco 1 – 2 Netherlands
Netherlands’ recent form
Netherlands’ last five matches: LWDWW–
The Netherlands are in decent form heading into their first knockout game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Their last five matches were against:
- 26/06/2026 (FIFA World Cup): Tunisia 1 – 3 Netherlands
- 20/06/2026 (FIFA World Cup): Netherlands 5 – 1 Sweden
- 14/06/2026 (FIFA World Cup): Netherlands 2 – 2 Japan
- 08/06/2026 (Friendly International): Netherlands 2 – 1 Uzbekistan
- 03/06/2026 (Friendly International): Netherlands 0 – 1 Algeria
The Netherlands were not in the best of form for a team of their calibre heading into the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Despite winning their final warm-up match against Uzbekistan, they had drawn with Ecuador before losing to Algeria ahead of the World Cup. In their last five matches, the Netherlands scored 12 goals and conceded 6 times.
The Netherlands are undefeated in the World Cup, drawing their opener against Japan, before dispatching Sweden and Tunisia, with each match featuring both teams scoring & over 2.5 goals. However, I have noticed that their recent success should be overshadowed by their poor defensive showing, as they conceded a goal in each of their last five matches despite Verbruggen pulling off some great saves.
Morocco’s recent form
Morocco’s last five matches: WDDWW–
Morocco enters the knockout round of the World Cup in great form, having won three and drawn twice in their last five outings. Their last five matches were against:
- 25/06/2026 (FIFA World Cup): Morocco 4 – 2 Haiti
- 20/06/2026 (FIFA World Cup): Scotland 0 – 1 Morocco
- 14/06/2026 (FIFA World Cup): Brazil 1 – 1 Morocco
- 07/06/2026 (Friendly International): Morocco 1 – 1 Norway
- 02/06/2026 (Friendly International): Morocco 4 – 0 Madagascar
Morocco have been in exceptional form since qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, and are undefeated in their last 30 outings (25 wins, 5 draws). However, despite their great winning form, I have noticed that they have been poor on their defensive transition and have conceded sloppy goals at the back.
Morocco has taken their sublime form into the World Cup, starting with a good draw against five times champs Brazil before putting away Scotland and Tunisia. In their last five outings, Morocco has scored 11 goals while conceding 4. They have built a reputation as a solid defensive unit, but their recent showing against Haiti has raised my eyebrow.
Team news
Netherlands team news
Injuries: N/A
Suspensions: N/A
Key players to watch: The towering Dutch captain Virgil van Dijk will be the focal point of the Dutch defence, and his aerial dominance will be key for goals from set pieces. Central midfielders Tijjani Reijnders and Frenkie de Jong will be pivotal in closing down space, blocking passing lanes, quickly recovering possession and distributing the ball out wide. Denzel Dumfries has been the talisman for the Dutch attack, utilising overlapping runs and hitting dangerous crosses into the box, allowing Cody Gakpo to cut inside and overload the penalty area. Brian Brobbey has shone in spearheading the Dutch attack and should be a threat for goals against Morocco.
Morocco team news
Injuries: N/A
Suspensions: N/A
Key players to watch: The world-class RB Achraf Hakimi has taken his club form to the international stage. As Morocco’s captain, he is fundamental to their attack. His rapid pace, overlapping runs and ability to switch the attack will stretch the Dutch defence and create chances for the Moroccan attack. Brahim Diaz leads the Moroccan attack and is their premier goal threat. His 1v1 dribbling and close control make it difficult to dispossess him of the ball. He should make great use of the spaces behind the Dutch defence in the transition. Al Hilal shot-stopper Yassine Bounou has been pivotal to Morocco’s unbeaten run. I expect him to be put to the test against a blistering Dutch attack and will need to replicate the world-class saves he made during the group stage. Ismael Saibari has been the breakout star for Morocco and has notched a goal in each group game, and should pose a threat to the Dutch defence. Sofyan Amrabat provides the tactical maturity and calm composure that will be critical to neutralise the Dutch midfield
Predicted lineups
Netherlands predicted XI
From watching the Netherlands in the group stage, I noticed that Ronald Koeman has relied heavily on the Dutch’s established spin and creative outlets from the flanks and deep positions in midfield and defence. The Netherlands operates using a fluid 4-3-3, prioritising territorial dominance with lethal wing play. They utilise a high line that presses high up the field and heavily relies on Dumfries to exploit the wing, allowing for Malen to make incisive runs into the box. The Dutch will look to use their aerial expertise to their advantage on dead balls and exploit van Dijk’s aerial threat. I predict the Oranje starting XI to feature:
Bart Verbruggen (G) – Denzel Dumfries – Jan Paul van Hecke – Virgil van Dijk (C) – Micky van de Ven – Frenkie de Jong – Ryan Gravenberch – Tijjani Reijnders – Donyell Malen – Cody Gakpo – Brian Brobbey.
Morocco predicted XI
In their group outings, I have noticed that head coach Mohamed Ouahbi has built his Moroccan side around a defensively solid 4-2-3-1 formation and has not altered his defensive approach that saw his side reach the semi-finals of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. However, his side is more adventurous this time around and has become more fluid with the ball, utilising overlapping runs from their fullbacks and wide rotations to draw out the defence and open up spaces for their strikers. I predict the Atlas Lions starting XI to feature:
Yassine Bounou (G) – Achraf Hakimi (C) – Issa Diop – Chadi Riad – Noussair Mazraoui – Neil El Aynaoui – Ayyoub Bouaddi – Brahim Díaz – Azzedine Ounahi – Bilal El Khannouss – Ismael Saibari.

Match analysis and verdict
The Netherlands and Morocco meet for the first time in almost a decade, in the first knockout round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, three decades to the date of their first-ever meeting at the 1996 FIFA World Cup. Both teams are in great form and will be vying to book their place in the last 16.
Despite predicting the Netherlands to easily defeat Tunisia in their final group game, I cannot see the Oranje having it easy against Morocco, who are undefeated in over 30 games. Both sides are in good goal-scoring form and should find the back of the net in this encounter. However, I expect the Oranje to qualify in regulation time, defeating the Atlas Lions 2-1.
