Match Details

Mexico were always going to be difficult to beat on their home patch but their amazing four game winning start to the World Cup without conceding a goal has shocked even their most ardent supporter. Next up is England who came into the tournament as one of the favorites but have flattered to deceive and needed the brilliance of Harry Kane to get them past DR Congo after trailing for much of the match. This encounter is set to take place at the iconic Estadio Azteca in Mexico City. South African viewers can catch the action at 02:00 on Monday 06 July.

Why This Match Matters

We often hear of teams that perform well at certain venues but Mexico’s love affair with the Estadio Azteca is on another level. The hosts have played 70 international matches at the stadium and have only lost just two of these games while they are undefeated in ten previous World Cup encounters at this venue. For England, this was the scene of one of their most heartbreaking moments, when 40 years ago, one Diego Maradona scored the infamous “Hand of God” goal that eliminated them from the 1986 tournament at the semi final stage. England will need to be much better in attack if they are to breach the Fort Know defence of Mexico and lay to rest the demons of the 1986 match.

Mexico vs England Head-to-Head Stats

Previous Meetings

These teams have met four times before with England winning all four of the matches while only conceding one goal while scoring 11. Their only previous meeting in the World Cup was in 1966 when England won 2-0 en route to their one and only title so this could be a good omen for them.

Mexico’s Recent Form

Mexico’s last five matches: WWWWW

Recent results include:

01/07/26 (World Cup): Mexico 2-0 Ecuador

25/06/26 (World Cup): Czech Republic 0-3 Mexico

19/06/26 (World Cup): Mexico 1-0 South Korea

11/06/26 (World Cup): Mexico 2-0 South Africa

05/06/26 (Friendly): Mexico 5-1 Serbia

Recent form: Mexico come into this Round of 16 clash as one of the form teams and were one of three teams that have won all four of their opening matches and the only side yet to concede a goal. Their World Cup campaign has been particularly impressive, with victories over South Korea, the Czech Republic and Ecuador with a great balance between attack and defence. Prior to the tournament, Mexico showed their form when they thrashed Serbia 5-1 in a friendly match. They have now scored 13 goals and conceded just one in the last five games.

England’s Recent Form

England’s last five matches: WWDWW

Recent results include:

01/07/26 (World Cup): England 2-1 D.R. Congo

27/06/26 (World Cup): Panama 0-2 England

23/06/26 (World Cup): England 0-0 Ghana

17/06/26 (World Cup): England 4-2 Croatia

10/06/26 (Friendly): England 3-0 Costa Rica

Recent form: England may be undefeated in the tournament but their form has been a mixed bag. They started off with a 4-2 win over Croatia but defensive lapses saw them surrender a 2-goal lead only to be bailed out by a strong second half. The Three Lions then endured a frustrating 0-0 draw with Ghana before clinching top spot in their group with a 2-0 win over Panama. In the Round of 32, they were given the biggest scare as they conceded early and trailed for most of the match before two great goals by Captain Kane saw them to an unconvincing win.

Team News

Mexico Team News

Mexico has no injury concerns but Coach Javier Aguirre must decide whether to continue with 17 year old star Gilberto Mora or the more experienced Brian Gutierrez. This selection will tell a lot about the mindset of the home side as the youngster is definitely the more attacking selection.

Injuries: Mexico has no injury concerns.

Suspensions: No suspensions.

Key players to watch: Mexico will again count on the experience of Raúl Jiménez to lead the attack with his dangerous runs set to trouble the England’s defence. Roberto Alvarado and Julián Quiñones will provide pace and creativity in the wide areas, while Luis Romo, Erik Lira and Marcel Ruiz must control possession in midfield and disrupt England’s rhythm. Defensively, centre-backs César Montes and Johan Vásquez will be tasked with containing Harry Kane, while goalkeeper Luis Ángel Malagón will try to keep his fifth clean sheet which will be no mean feat against an England team with threats all around.

England Team News

Thomas Tuchel has major selection dilemmas as the poor showing of Djed Spence at right back will be of major concern. Declan Rice was moved to right back late in the game against DR Congo but that is not a realistic option for this match. Anthony Gordon is sure to return in place of Rashford after the Barcelona bound player provided Kane with two assists.

Injuries: Jarell Quansah and Reece James are still not available for selection.

Suspensions: No suspensions.

Key players to watch: Captain Harry Kane will again be the talisman for the English with his world class finishing but will need better service than he received against DR Congo. Bukayo Saka and Anthony Gordon will look to stretch the play but will need to be more direct and take on the Mexican defence, while Jude Bellingham is expected to dictate the tempo and link midfield with attack. Declan Rice and Elliot Anderson will be crucial in winning the midfield battle, while Ezri Konsa and Marc Guéhi will aim to keep Raúl Jiménez quiet at the back. Jordan Pickford will be the last line of defence and will be hoping for his second clean sheet of the tournament.

Match analysis and verdict

Mexico have been one of the standout teams of the tournament, winning all four games without conceding a goal. Their defence has been compact and rock solid, led by  César Montes and Johan Vásquez. The England attack on the other hand has looked toothless at times, but they will need to find a way to be more penetrative if they hope to break the Mexican fort.

The hosts have not only defended well but have been superb in transition with the pacy duo of Roberto Alvarado and Julián Quiñones posing a constant threat on the counter-attack along with the dangerman Raul Jimenez. The Three Lions however have the quality on paper but need to transfer all that talent onto the pitch in a very hostile atmosphere which I don’t believe they can do. I am therefore predicting a home win by a 2-1 scoreline.

Prediction: Mexico 2 – 1 England
