Race 1 – 1200m (Maiden Plate)

Avernian Goddess should be hard to beat in the opener. At 5/10 odds, she is too low to back as a single bet, so we searched for place value. Ubukhwebezana is an interesting runner in this sprint race. She has had fair form since relocating to KZN and now drops to 1200m. She could be the value in this race at 9/1.

Suggested Bet – Ubukhwebezana EW @ 9/1EW Win

Race 2 – 1400m (Maiden Plate)

Future Flo is a consistent three-year-old close to shedding his maiden tag. He always seems to find a few better than him, but he generally runs into the money. Rachel Venniker takes 1.5kgs off, and he should be competitive at 58.5kgs in this field.

Suggested Bet – Future Flo EW @ 7.5/1EW Place

Race 3 – 2200m (Maiden Plate)

It’s a weak maiden race, so conservative stakes if betting. Taxhaven should win if he reproduces his impressive run in the Grade 1 SA Derby. The problem is he has not shown that form since that run, so we can’t back him at 7/10. Instead, we searched for place value and found Fire Force. He has moderate form, but his last few runs have been encouraging. He now gets champion jockey Richard Fourie in the saddle, which could make a difference.

Suggested Bet – Fire Force EW @ 7.5/1

Race 4 – 1600m (Pinnacle Stakes)

Double Superlative returns to the track after a 20-week break. He is the class horse in this race and is entered in the 2024 Durban July. This race is his prep run for the big day in July, and he may need this run. Therefore, we prefer his stable companion, Triple Time, to fight out the finish. The four-year-old has finished second in his last three starts, and his consistency may be rewarded in this Pinnacle.

Suggested Bet – Triple Time EW @ 5/1 Void – Scratched

Race 5 – 1000m (FM 96 Handicap)

It is sprint race time, and we are in the camp of War Empress. The four-year-old filly carries just 48kgs and may be hard to catch from a good draw of three. She has fair form, and her low weight could make the difference between winning and running out of the placings.

Suggested Bet – War Empress EW @ 5.55/1

Race 6 – 2400m (Grade 3 – Tabgold Derby)

It is an intriguing Grade 3 with many Durban July hopefuls. While many are pretenders for this big day, Without Question is a big value runner come July. Therefore, the approach for Without Question will be one to watch here. He is the favourite in this race, and if he does win, he should get a weight hike for the July race. Therefore, the trainer may rather have him run a solid prep run but not win. Weight advantages generally play a massive part in the Durban July, so it may be best for Without Question not to win this prep race.

Aragosta has been running well of late and, in this competitive Grade 3, can return to the winner’s enclosure. He is nominated for the Durban July and can make waves should he win this race. He is a top sort, and trainer Mike de Kock will have him in pristine condition for this race.

Suggested Bet – Aragosta EW @ 7/1EW Place

Race 7 – 2400m (Grade 2 – Tabgold Oaks)

Everything is in the favour of My Soul Mate in this Grade 2 Oaks. She is best weighted, gets a top jockey in Richard Fourie and gets pole position, so she is the one to beat. At 15/10, she should be a banker for many in the exotics.

Suggested Bet – My Soul Mate to win @ 1.55/1

Race 8 – 1400m (MR 84 Handicap)

It is a competitive MR 84 and a tough race to call, with many with chances for victory. Joshua Hotsnake is an ultra-consistent horse, and his next win is overdue. He has finished second in each of his last five starts. He is banging at the door for his next win, and with 55kgs, he can be competitive from a good draw of three.

Suggested Bet – Joshua Hotsnake EW @ 9/1

Race 9 – 1400m (FM 76 Handicap)

Kailene was once rated a 106 and competed in multiple Grade 1 and 2 races. Now, as a five-year-old, her rating has steadily dropped to an MR 80. She takes a drop in class for this race and can return to winning ways of this mark. She has strong form lines and can run well even with top weight. Rachel Venniker takes 1.5kgs off, and that could prove the difference in this race. It is the lucky last at Greyville, and we think Kailene will send the bettors home happy.

Suggested Bet – Kailene EW @ 8/1
