Horse Racing Today
Saturday’s horse racing action is available from Gauteng, with an eleven-race program from the Turffontein Standside track. Racing begins at 11:20 and includes eight Class A events, seven Graded races and the massive 2024 Betway Summer Cup in Race 8. Below are our South African horse racing today tips, predictions and suggested bets for the day’s racing. Race 1 – 800m (Maiden Juvenile Plate)
The opening race on the big day is a maiden juvenile race (2-year olds). These babies are seeing a racing track for the first time. I have no suggested bets, as there are bigger and better races to come, so save your cash.

Race 2 – 1160m (Maiden Plate)
KALEESH CYBORG has been a beaten short odds favourite in his last two races. He has gone close to winning several times, and is overdue to notch up his first win. There is no better time to deliver than on Summer Cup day. At 12/1 in the betting, the gelding gets the blinkers fitted and represents excellent EW value, with up to four places on offer.

Race 3 – 1400m (Pinnacle Stakes)
The opening leg of the Place Accumulator and I think you can banker DAVE THE KING. You can ignore his last start as he was reported not to be striding out. He is the best weighted runner in this race and will take a power of beating.

Race 4 – 1160m (Grade 3)
MRS BROWNING ran a good race in her comeback prep run last time. She should strip much fitter now and is a contender in the opening leg of the Pick 6. On best form, she should have a say in the outcome of this race, and I love her EW value.

Race 5 – 1160m (Grade 3)
LUCKY LAD will be a banker for many on the day, but I cant have him at those odds and his hefty mass. I am playing to beat him and I am in the camp of CATS PAJAMAS. The three-year-old is a progressive gelding and carries a low mass of 52kgs. He is drawn on the outside, and if his travels went well, he is a massive threat to both LUCKY LAD and PISTOL PETE.

Race 6 – 1600m (Grade 3)
OLIVIA’S WAY has made massive progress over the last few months. She has won three in a row and four of her last five races. This is her toughest race to date, but I think she could be ahead of the handicapper. The booking of Richard Fourie is a massive plus as well. If she continues her natural progression, she can run into the money.

Race 7 – 1600m (Grade 2)
For many, this leg should be a banker in most exotics, as GREATERIX should win. If you are playing for an upset, then I suggest you take the field and hope for a shock winner. The 9/10 on GREATERIX is too short for a bet, but I will not put anyone off who wants to back him. Instead I searched for better value and prefer QUID PRO QUO. The filly is loaded with ability and has won five in a row. She is taking on male rivals, but with some luck in running, she should fill out the exacta with GREATERIX.

Race 8 – 2000m (2024 Betway Summer Cup)
The big one, the 2024 Betway Summer Cup, South Africa’s richest horse race. This is a stacked field and I think you should load up in all exotics. Many horses have winning chances, but I can’t see past ROYAL VICTORY. The five-year-old has developed into a champion middle distance runner and is the defending champion of this race, having won impressively in 2023.
He loves racing at Turffontein and the long run in suits him perfectly. If he does not find any trouble in running, he will be mowing them down at the finish. At 10/1 in the betting, he represents excellent EW value. I will be shocked if he runs out of the money.

Race 9 – 2000m (Listed Race)
GOOD COUNCIL has been running well and is in a good space. He is nicely weighted in this event and I expect another good outing. On his best form, he should be capable of winning this race and I love his EW value.

Race 10 – 3200m (Non-Black Type)
For Jackpot 3, it’s either you banker POETS WARRIOR or take the field. The five-year-old has won four of his last five runs and is the short priced betting favourite. I am trying to beat him though, and I am in the camp of EXPLOSIVE BOND. The filly carries 52kgs and is a massive threat to her male rivals.

Race 11 – 1600m (MR 96 Handicap)
It is time for the lucky last on the card and I went looking for some value. Whether this is your get out stakes race or the icing on the cake of a profitable day, I found some exceptional value. MASTERSHIP races with 58.5kgs, and merits healthy respect. He is unbeaten over course and distance and has 3 wins and a second in four runs over the mile. At 8/1, I suggest you have a proper EW bet and lets close off the 2024 Betway Summer Cup in style.
