The 2024 Durban July may have taken place yesterday, but horse racing continues in South Africa. Sunday’s horse racing action is available from Gauteng, with an eight-race program from the Turffontein Standside track. Racing begins at 12:25 and includes a Grade 3 event in Race 7. Below are our South African horse racing tips, predictions and suggested bets for the day’s racing. Turffontein Selections
Race 1 – 1400m (Juvenile Plate)
Miss Scaletta has two wins from three races and is in good form. She carries top weight here but can run well with some luck. Her last win was against males, and back against her sex, she represents EW value.

Legend Of Arthur should win, but he has no value at 5/10. Instead, I prefer Zanthar to run well after gelding. His last start behind Truth was good, and with some luck, he can finish the best of the rest behind Legend Of Arthur.

Race 3 – 1600m (Maiden Plate)
Kamensky has two good runs under his belt and will love the rise to the mile. He has shown improvement in each run, and I expect more improvement to come. He can pose a challenge to the two favourites.

Lady Of Tibet’s last start was impressive, and she carries a handy galloping mass in this 1600m race. If she can reproduce that run, she should run into the placings in this type of field.

Race 5 – 1600m (Pinnacle Stakes)
William Iron Man is the top-rated horse in this Pinnacle and should win. However, I prefer the value of Joker Man. The three-year-old has turned into a quality horse and has won four in a row. He is taking on stronger now but gets the services of champion jockey Richard Fourie. Joker Man could still be ahead of the handicapper, so have a good EW bet.

Race 6 – 1100m (Pinnacle Stakes)
It is a competitive Pinnacle, with nine of the eleven runners rated higher than an MR 100. I like the chances of Lucky Lad to bounce back from his disappointing Grade 1 Gold Challenge effort. He is the class horse in the field, and even with 62kgs, he should take a power of beating.

Race 7 – 1800m (Grade 3)
The featured race of the day, Hotarubi, is weighted to win. The MR 116, a three-year-old, is handicapped to beat this field and should have no issues. He just missed out on running at the 2024 Durban July, so winning this Grade 3 event is a decent consolation.

Race 8 – 1160m (MR 74 Handicap)
Risky Business has not finished far back from the winner in her last few starts. She carries just 52kgs in this sprint and can give the males a challenge. With some luck in running, I expect her to finish in the money and give us some EW returns.
