Thursday’s horse racing action is available from Gauteng, with an eight-race program from the Vaal Main track. Racing begins at 12:13 and includes a competitive Middle Stakes event in Race 4. HEY HEY JULIA has decent form and should not be a maiden for too long. She finished her last race well and will love the 1200m. She is a big runner in this field if she jumps on terms.

CAPTAIN CLEVER ran a good debut effort when he finished third and was then gelded. He should be competitive if he has no issues after the gelding and is fit to race.

Race 3 – 1600m (Maiden Handicap)
I am taking a chance on ROLL OF THE DICE in this maiden handicap race. He has decent form and should run well again. He will enjoy the step down to the mile and, despite carrying top weight, is a leading contender. For the Pick 6, you should also include RED LEGEND and CAPTAIN JIM.

Race 4 – 2000m (Middle Stakes)
It is a competitive Middle Stakes event, and you should go wide in the exotics. SUGAR BLAST and FLYING BULL are the class horses in the race but are carded to run with 62kgs. I looked elsewhere and found STREWN SKY. The four-year-old has good form lines and runs with a handy weight of 56kgs. With some luck, he should finish in the money.

Race 5 – 1500m (MR 66 Handicap)
CALIDA is better weighted than RISKY BUSINESS and should finish ahead. However, RISKY BUSINESS has won her last two starts and is searching for the hat trick. She is in a good space, and despite being worse off at the weights, I believe she can run into the placings.

Race 6 – 1500m (MR 80 Handicap)
I am taking a chance on an old timer in this race, NORDIC REBEL. At the ripe old age of 11, the gelding is still racing and loving it. He has won twice and finished second once in his last four races. He loves racing on this course, and if fit, he should pose a threat at double-digit odds.

The lucky last, and once again, I am in the camp of another older horse. SAMOA is a ten-year-old mare who, like NORDIC REBEL, is still enjoying racing despite being ready for the retirement home in racing terms. She runs well for Gavin Lerena, and the pair can be competitive. Whether she wins is the big question, but she has the form to sneak a place.
