Turffontein Selections

Race 1 – 1800m (Maiden Plate)

A work rider’s main plate opens racing on Thursday, and I advise readers not to stake big. My tentative selection is Rastignac, a three-year-old gelding. He is returning from a five-month break and has changed stables. He can sneak a place if he is fit and ready to race.

Suggested Bet – Rastignac EW @ 5.55/1

Race 2 – 1000m (Maiden Juvenile Plate)

Bellissivar finished behind the favourite Seventeen Again in their last start. She has fair form and is weighted to finish closer here, and with some luck in running, she can fill out the exact.

Suggested Bet – Bellissivar EW @ 5/1EW Place

Race 3 – 1000m (Maiden Juvenile Plate)

Komati River hails from the Toney Peter stable and is a progressive filly. Her last start was good when she finished second. She may not be the stable elect here, as her compatriot Wtachman is the favourite. However, I think she can produce an upset, run into the money, and possibly even win.

Suggested Bet – Komati River EW @ 5/1 Void-Scratched

Race 4 – 1800m (Maiden Plate)

Butternutenrooiwyn produced a shock second in her last start at a massive price. I am taking a small EW bet on her to confirm that improvement. She is a lively lurker in this maiden race if she can run anything like her last race.

Suggested Bet – Butternutenrooiwyn EW @ 5/1

Race 5 – 2600m (Middle Stakes)

Most of these horses have been racing against each other, so basing a form selection is not preferred. I instead searched for EW value and found Absolute Value. He won’t win or place based on his last start against most of these rivals. However, he has his third run after a rest and should strip fitter. He had two wins in a row three races back and has lost form since returning. If he can reproduce those previous efforts from the end of last year, he can pull off the upset.

Suggested Bet – Absolute Value EW @ 15/1

Race 6 – 2000m (MR 74 Handicap)

Silvano’s Song has continued to drop in the ratings and takes a drop in class here. On his best form, he should win comfortably, but that form has disappeared. I hope he can rediscover that form, as his last few starts have been fair.

Suggested Bet – Silvano’s Song EW @ 4.5/1EW Place

Race 7 – 1450m (FM 90 Handicap)

Golden Aspen has three wins in her last four races. She is taking on stronger here, but she is in a good space and has a low weight. Running with just 55.5kgs and from a pole draw, she can be competitive and represents EW value.

Suggested Bet – Golden Aspen EW @ 7/1

Race 8 – 1450m (FM 73 Handicap)

I think a two-year-old will win the race, and the value lies with One Party. She is carrying 54kgs and is getting 6kgs and 4kgs from the other two-year-old rivals. Her last race win has been franked as Kamensky came out and won on Sunday. She is a progressive filly and may have more to come. She is taking on stronger horses in this handicap event, but I think she can run into the money.

Suggested Bet – One Party EW @ 6.5/1
