Why This Match Matters

History will be made by either Australia or Egypt as they seek to win their first ever knockout match at the World Cup. Both teams have blown hot and cold in the tournament with the Pharaohs reaching their peak in the 3-1 win over New Zealand while the Aussies won 2-0 over Turkey who were the bookies favourite in the opening round. Goals have been difficult to come by for Australia while Egypt have been superb in defence, keeping two clean sheets in their three games to date. This match could possibly be settled by a single goal therefore both teams need to take any half chances that come their way.

Recent form: Australia started their World Cup campaign with a bang as they beat the much-fancied Turley team 2-0. They then suffered a loss to hosts, the USA by the same margin and this left their qualifying hopes in uncertain waters. The Socceroo’s played out a goalless draw in their last group match against Paraguay to book their place in the Round of 32. They have kept two clean sheets in their three matches in the World Cup.

They followed that up with a 1-1 draw with Iran and have shown that they can grind out results even when they are not playing at their best.

Team News

Australia Team News

Head coach Tony Popovic is expected to keep faith with the side that impressed in the win over Paraguay. Highly-rated young centre-back Lucas Herrington should retain his place in defence.

Injuries:Jacob Italiano and Mathew Leckie will not be considered due to injury.

Suspensions: No suspensions.

Key players to watch: Argentina will once again look to Lionel Messi to inspire their attack and add to his impressive tally of six goals. Julián Álvarez and Lautaro Martínez both have to be at their clinical best if they are to break down the resolute Capo Verde defence. The midfield combination of Enzo Fernández, Alexis Mac Allister and Rodrigo De Paul will look to control possession and provide the link to the attacking trio up front.  Emiliano Martínez provides the confidence and reliability between the posts although he is expected to have a quiet match.

Egypt Team News

There are a number of players under injury doubt including Mo Salah but the magnitude of the match should see all those players declared fit.

Injuries: Mohamed Salah and Hamdy Fathy have injury clouds but are expected to be fit.

Suspensions: Mohanad Lasheen is serving a one match ban.

Key players to watch: Egypt will once again look to Mohamed Salah to provide the spark in attack with his pace, creativity and clinical finishing. At the back, the experienced pairing of Rami Rabia and Yasser Ibrahim will be crucial in keeping Australia at bay, while goalkeeper Omar Shobeir will need to command his area and make key saves when called upon.

Match analysis and verdict

Australia will again look to their resolute defence to keep the attacking threats like Salah and Marmoush at bay.  Aiden O’Neill and Paul Okon-Engstler will be tasked with trying to control the midfield battle. The pace of Nestory Irankunda and Cristian Volpato will be their biggest attacking weapons, while Harry Souttar must lead the defence and deal with Egypt’s dangerous forward line.

Egypt will be relying on Salah as he remains the key figure and will look to exploit space in wide areas, while Marmoush provides pace and intelligent movement through the middle. Emam Ashour and Zizo have an important role as they seek to win possession to supply the forwards.  Australia’s work rate and organisation should make this a competitive contest, but Egypt’s superior attacking talent and rock like defence makes me predict a Pharoah’s win by 2-0.

Prediction: Australia 0 – 2 Egypt
