Match Details

Belgium take on Senegal in this round of 32 encounter at Lumen Field, Seattle, Washington. Both these teams took the difficult route to the knockout stages as they failed to win their opening two matches although the Europeans managed two draws while Senegal began with two losses. The similarities between the World Cup campaigns continued to their final group games where they both scored five goals to clinch their spot in the round of 32. South African viewers can catch the action from 22:00 (SA time) on Wednesday, 1 July.

Why This Match Matters

Belgium have been one of the leading teams in the world for the last five years and were even ranked number one for a period but have failed to perform on the biggest stage. This is probably the last chance saloon for a number of their stars like Kevin de Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku so they will be going all out for the victory. Senegal will need to break the curse of losing to European opposition at the World Cup if they are to progress to the round of 16. They certainly have the players to beat Belgium but need to start well and avoid conceding an early goal. This will in all likelihood be the swansong of Captain Sadio Mane and they will want to give him the best possible farewell.

Key players to watch: Belgium will still rely on their leading goal scorer, Romelu Lukaku to lead the attack with his strength and finishing ability and will be expecting a 90 minute performance from their Man. City star,Jérémy Doku. His pace and dribbling can trouble Senegal’s defence while Leandro Trossard adds creativity in the final third and always has an eye for goal. Kevin De Bruyne will be key to controlling the game with his vision and passing, supported by Youri Tielemans in midfield. Defensively, Zeno Debast and Arthur Theate must contain Senegal’s dangerous forwards with the world class Thibaut Courtois between the sticks.

Senegal’s first-choice goalkeeper Edouard Mendy missed the win over Qatar with a knee problem. He is back in training but Mory Diaw will start if Mendy doesn’t recover in time. Veteran defender Kalidou Koulibaly could be overlooked again after being dropped against Qatar.

In midfield, Idrissa Gana Gueye will be vital in winning possession and disrupting Belgium’s rhythm. Match analysis and verdict

Belgium will look to dominate the possession and rely on Kevin De Bruyne dictating play from midfield and creating chances for Romelu Lukaku in and around the penalty area. Jeremy Doku’s pace and dribbling ability will be key in stretching Senegal’s defence, while Amadou Onana provides the physical presence and composure needed to win midfield battles and protect the back four.

Senegal on the other hand have the pace and quality to trouble Belgium on the break. Sadio Mané remains their biggest attacking threat, capable of creating chances from wide areas or finishing off himself. Nicolas Jackson’s movement will test Belgium’s defence, while Idrissa Gana Gueye and Pape Matar Sarr must work tirelessly in midfield to disrupt De Bruyne’s influence and launch quick transitions.

Belgium’s experience, creativity and ability to control possession could prove too much for Senegal although they have enough attacking quality to make life difficult. I am expecting a tight contest with Belgium eventually winning 2-1.

Prediction: Belgium 2-1 Senegal
