The class of the horse – Understanding the class of a race and the relative ratings of horses within that class is indeed crucial for handicapping and predicting race outcomes. Horses that are competing in a class above their usual level often struggle to perform well against stronger competition. Conversely, horses dropping down in class may have an advantage over their rivals.

Weight of the horse – Weight matters a lot in horse racing. If a horse has too much weight, it can slow them down and make it hard for them to win.
