Thursday’s horse racing action is available from Gauteng, with an eight-race program from the Vaal Main track. Racing begins at 12:35 and includes a competitive MR 96 Handicap event in Race 7. The card opens with a big field maiden plate race and I searched for EW value. BELLA BOOP BOOP is at a massive 50/1 in the betting. She gets the blinkers fitted and carries a handy mass of 55kgs. With some luck in running, she can sneak into the top five.

Race 2 – 1400m (Maiden Plate)
HIGHVELD STORM has fair recent form and will not be a maiden for too long. I am surprised at the high odds on the gelding, who has finished in the money in each of his last four starts. At 15/1, I suggest a nice EW bet, especially since we are getting five places on offer.

Race 3 – 1800m (Maiden Plate)
CITY LIGHTS has been unlucky not to shed her maiden as yet. She always runs well and her consistency may finally be rewarded with a first win in this event.

Race 4 – 1700m (MR 66 Handicap)
VAVA VEGAS has been running well and has not finished too far from the winners. He drops back in class, and that should make him a leading contender.

Race 5 – 1400m (Novice Handicap)
KEY NEWS is a lightly raced three-year-old who looks progressive. If he jumps on terms, then I expect a bold run. With some luck in running, he should fight out the finish.

Race 6 – 1475m (Middle Stakes)
On weight turnarounds, this race is POMODORO’S JET to lose. He jumps from a pole draw, and with Craig Zackey in the saddle, he is the horse to beat.

Race 7 – 1000m (MR 96 Handicap)
I think the betting is wrong in this race, and RAVEN BLACK should not be favourite. He is returning from a lengthy 408-day break and will most likely need this run. I am in the camp of CHOCOLATE SOLDIER who has exceptional form over this sprint distance. In six races, he has three wins and two seconds. For me, he is the horse they all have to beat.

Race 8 – 1000m (MR 80 Handicap)
JOHNNY APPLESEED is better than his last start as he tired at the finish. He should strip fitter now, and could still be ahead of the handicapper. At 6/1 in the betting, I suggest a nice EW bet to close the days proceedings.
